Mercedes CLA & GLA Electric Steering Rack Repair
Specialist assessment, repair, reconditioning, replacement supply and fitting for CLA C117/X117 and C118/X118; GLA X156 and H247.
Mercedes CLA and GLA steering specialists
Pro Power Steering assesses and repairs suitable Mercedes CLA and GLA electric power-assisted steering racks. We can recondition the original unit where appropriate, supply a correctly identified replacement, or discuss professional supply and fitting for private customers, garages, workshops and trade partners.
Mercedes can use different steering gears within the same model year. Right-hand-drive specification, build date, drivetrain, steering ratio, driver-assistance equipment, software level and every suffix on the original label can affect compatibility. We therefore confirm work from the full VIN, diagnostic information and the complete original rack label.
Generation and steering-system coverage
CLA C117/X117 and GLA X156
These first-generation CLA and GLA models share the Mercedes 246 compact platform with W176/W246 vehicles. This explains why some A246 rack numbers appear on more than one model, but body, drivetrain, steering ratio, AMG/4MATIC specification and assistance equipment can still require a different unit.
CLA C118/X118 and GLA H247
Later CLA and GLA generations use newer rack hardware and vehicle electronics. C118/X118 CLA and H247 GLA must be identified separately; an early C117/X156 rack must not be selected from the model name or A246 prefix alone.
Mercedes OE rack reference families
Early CLA C117/X117 and GLA X156 compact-platform references can include A2464601201, A2464602001, A2464605101, A2464606900 and A2464609700, alongside other A246 families also found on related A-Class and B-Class applications. This overlap is genuine platform sharing, not universal interchangeability. Later CLA C118/X118 and GLA H247 applications use different A177/A247-family hardware and must be confirmed from the complete Mercedes number, every suffix, VIN and original supplier label.
Common electric steering symptoms
Driver symptoms
- Heavy, intermittent or uneven steering assistance
- Steering warning message or red/yellow steering symbol
- Knocking, free play, noise or poor self-centring
- Assistance lost after starting, driving or warming up
Diagnostic findings
- Motor, torque-sensor or internal-control faults
- Power-supply, earth or communication faults
- Steering-angle or end-stop calibration faults
- Driver-assistance warnings linked to steering data
A fault code does not automatically prove that the rack is defective. Battery condition, power supply, wiring, connectors, network communication, alignment and calibration should be checked as part of a proper diagnosis.
Repair, reconditioning, supply and fitting
Repair your original rack
Where suitable, repairing the vehicle’s original correctly matched unit can avoid unnecessary compatibility problems.
Replacement rack supply
Correctly identified reconditioned units may be available subject to stock, exchange conditions and full unit identification.
Supply and professional fitting
Private customers, garages, workshops, resellers and trade partners can ask about supply, fitting and workshop support.
Programming, calibration and wheel alignment
Many correctly matched racks can operate without software programming, but this depends on the exact vehicle and unit. Steering-angle calibration, end-stop learning, initialisation, coding, driver-assistance calibration or wheel alignment may still be required. We confirm the appropriate next steps after identifying the vehicle and rack.
