Mercedes Electric Power Steering Rack Repair

Repair, reconditioning and reconditioned rack sales — supplied, fitted or delivered UK-wide.

Mercedes EPS Rack Repair Specialists

Pro Power Steering provides Mercedes EPS rack repair, assessment and reconditioning for applicable cars and vans with electromechanical power steering. Customers can also buy a suitable reconditioned replacement rack from us for supply, workshop fitting or arranged UK delivery.

Mercedes steering systems differ by model, generation, drivetrain and equipment. Standard electromechanical steering, Direct-Steer, speed-sensitive assistance, rear-axle steering and driver-assistance functions must not be treated as the same component. We identify the vehicle and original rack before confirming repairability, compatibility or price.

Mercedes Models With Electric Steering Rack Applications

We can assess applicable electric steering systems from the following Mercedes-Benz model families. Coverage varies within each range, so the VIN, steering equipment and original part number must be checked before a repair or replacement rack is confirmed.

A-Class, B-Class, CLA and compact SUVs

Applicable systems across relevant A-Class, B-Class, CLA, GLA and GLB generations, including 4MATIC and suitable Mercedes-AMG variants.

C-Class and GLC

Electric steering rack applications for relevant C-Class saloon, estate, coupé and cabriolet models, plus GLC SUV and Coupé derivatives.

E-Class and CLS

Applicable newer E-Class saloon, estate, coupé and cabriolet systems, together with relevant CLS and Mercedes-AMG variants.

S-Class, SL and AMG GT

Applicable front electric steering systems for relevant newer S-Class, SL and Mercedes-AMG GT models. Rear-axle steering is a separate system where fitted.

GLE and GLS

Electric steering applications for relevant newer GLE and GLS SUVs and coupés, including 4MATIC, AMG Line and suitable Mercedes-AMG derivatives.

EQ models, Sprinter, Vito and V-Class

Applicable steering systems for EQA, EQB, EQC, EQE and EQS families, plus relevant newer Sprinter, eSprinter, Vito, eVito and V-Class applications.

Important: Mercedes may use different racks within one model and year. We confirm the steering type and application from the VIN, vehicle specification and original unit rather than assuming every version uses the same rack.

Common Mercedes EPS Symptoms We Can Assess

  • Heavy steering or complete loss of power assistance
  • “Power steering malfunction” or assistance warning
  • Assistance unavailable at start-up or returning after a restart
  • Intermittent assistance or steering that changes in weight
  • Knocking, play, creaking or mechanical rack noise
  • Notchy, uneven or binding steering with no stored fault code
  • Water ingress, corrosion or damaged rack connections
  • Warnings after battery, alignment, suspension or steering work

If steering assistance is reduced or unavailable, the vehicle can require substantially more effort to steer. Stop using the vehicle if it is unsafe and arrange professional diagnosis or recovery.

Battery voltage, power and earths

Low starting voltage, an unstable charging supply, poor earths, fuses or damaged power connections can cause steering warnings and communication faults. These checks should be completed before the rack is condemned.

Mechanical noise without a code

A rack can knock, creak, bind or develop play without storing an electronic fault. Inner joints, mountings, the steering column and nearby suspension components must also be inspected.

Steering and driver-assistance systems

A front EPS rack fault is not the same as a warning from Active Steering Assist, lane-keeping equipment or rear-axle steering. The exact module and complete scan are important.

Mercedes EPS Fault Codes and Code Families

Send a complete XENTRY or equivalent diagnostic report, including control unit N68 where applicable, the full code, description, status, frequency and freeze-frame information. The examples below appear in Mercedes-Benz service information, but the correct route depends on model series, software level, Mon_ID or sub-fault data and the guided XENTRY test. A code alone does not prove that the steering rack must be replaced.

Code or code family What it can indicate What should be checked
P063500 Electric power steering malfunction. On specified model series Mercedes-Benz has documented a no-assistance-at-start condition caused by EPS control-unit software. Record the Mon_ID/root-cause data and exact vehicle application. Complete the XENTRY guided check and verify N68 software before deciding that hardware is defective.
P063547 / P063509 Runtime or related electric-power-steering malfunction entries documented with start-up loss of assistance on certain newer Mercedes applications. Capture the complete freeze-frame and Mon_ID values. Check voltage and software status and follow the vehicle-specific XENTRY procedure.
P063544 Data-memory fault that can be stored after flashing or initialising N68 on specified models, sometimes without a warning or functional restriction. Check the status and Mon_ID. Mercedes service information identifies documented cases where the stored entry can be cleared and rack replacement is unnecessary.
P063507 + sub-fault 50009 Mechanical-fault entry with blocking/freezing detection documented on certain applications; possible causes include water entry through a damaged steering-gear boot or software level. Inspect both boots and the gear for water or damage, record the sub-fault data and confirm software status. Follow XENTRY guidance before agreeing replacement.
Communication and voltage codes CAN interruption, low supply voltage, power or earth faults can create steering warnings or unavailable assistance without proving internal rack failure. Send the complete vehicle scan and test the battery, charging supply, fuses, power, earths, connectors and network communication.
No stored steering DTC Mechanical wear, knocking, play, stiffness, binding or notchy steering may be present without an electronic code. Inspect the rack mechanically and rule out inner joints, mountings, the steering column and nearby suspension components. Send a symptom description or video.

No Mercedes EPS Fault Code but a Noisy Rack?

This is possible. Diagnostic trouble codes are generated for conditions monitored by the control modules; they do not identify every worn guide, bush, inner joint, mounting point or other mechanical source of noise and play.

If the steering knocks, creaks, feels loose, binds or becomes notchy while the scan remains clear, describe when it happens—for example while parking, changing direction, crossing uneven surfaces or turning near full lock.

Correct identification matters: a noise close to the rack is not automatically produced by the rack. Track rods, inner joints, steering-column joints, mountings and suspension components should be checked before work is agreed.

A Mercedes Fault Code Is Not a Complete Diagnosis

Mercedes diagnostic records can include fault status, frequency, mileage, voltage and surrounding operating conditions. Low voltage, coding, calibration, wiring, communication, alignment and other vehicle conditions can create steering warnings without proving an internal rack failure.

Our approach: we match the symptoms and diagnostic information to the vehicle and original rack, review the electrical and mechanical evidence, and explain the appropriate assessment step before Mercedes EPS rack repair or reconditioning is agreed.

Mercedes Electric Power Steering FAQs

Do all Mercedes models use the same electric steering rack?

No. Steering type, rack generation and equipment vary by model, year and specification. The VIN and original rack number must be checked.

Can you repair my original Mercedes steering rack?

Many suitable units can be assessed for repair or reconditioning, but the rack must be identified and its condition considered before work is confirmed.

Can I buy a reconditioned Mercedes EPS rack?

Yes, for suitable applications and subject to stock. Send the VIN and original rack number so we can check supply, exchange terms and price.

Does a Mercedes steering warning always mean the rack has failed?

No. Voltage, wiring, communication, coding, calibration, alignment and other vehicle conditions can produce steering warnings. A proper diagnosis is essential.

Can a Mercedes rack be mechanically noisy without a fault code?

Yes. Electronic diagnostics do not detect every worn mechanical component. The rack and nearby steering and suspension parts should be inspected.

Will the Mercedes need coding or calibration?

Depending on the model and work completed, steering-angle calibration, end-stop learning, coding, alignment or other setup may be required. This is confirmed for the individual vehicle.
