BMW Electric Power Steering Rack Repair
BMW EPS Rack Repair Specialists
Pro Power Steering provides BMW EPS rack repair, assessment and reconditioning for applicable vehicles with electromechanical power steering. We can also discuss the supply of a suitable reconditioned replacement rack where the correct application is available.
BMW steering systems differ by model, generation, drivetrain and equipment. EPS, Servotronic, Variable Sport Steering, Active Steering and Integral Active Steering are not interchangeable descriptions. We identify the vehicle, steering specification and original rack before confirming repairability, compatibility or price.

Applicable systems across relevant 1 and 2 Series generations, including Coupé, Convertible, Active Tourer, Gran Coupé and M Performance variants, plus applicable M2 models.
BMW 3 Series and 4 Series
Selected E9x and relevant F3x and G2x electric steering systems, including Touring, Gran Turismo, Gran Coupé and applicable M3 and M4 variants.
BMW 5, 6, 7 and 8 Series
Applicable saloon, Touring, Gran Turismo, Gran Coupé and performance derivatives, including relevant M5, M6, M8 and Alpina applications.
BMW X1, X2, X3 and X4
Electric steering rack applications for relevant compact and mid-size BMW X models, including M Sport, M Performance and applicable X3 M and X4 M variants.
BMW X5, X6 and X7
Applicable newer X5, X6 and X7 steering systems, including xDrive, M Performance and relevant X5 M and X6 M derivatives.
BMW i and Z4 models
Applicable steering systems for BMW i3, i4, i5, i7 and iX models, plus relevant newer Z4 applications. Exact equipment and rack identity remain essential.
Common BMW EPS Symptoms We Can Assess
- Heavy steering or complete loss of power assistance
- “Increased steering effort” or steering-assistance warning
- Assistance unavailable at start-up or returning after a restart
- Intermittent assistance or steering that changes in weight
- Knocking, play, creaking or mechanical rack noise
- Notchy, uneven or binding steering with no stored fault code
- Water ingress, corrosion or damaged rack connections
- Warnings after battery, alignment, suspension or steering work
If steering assistance is reduced or unavailable, the vehicle can require substantially more effort to steer. Stop using the vehicle if it is unsafe and arrange professional diagnosis or recovery.
Battery voltage, power and earths
Low starting voltage, an unstable charging supply, poor earths, fuses or damaged power connections can cause EPS warnings and communication faults. These checks should be completed before the rack is condemned.
Mechanical noise without a code
A rack can knock, creak, bind or develop play without storing an electronic fault. Inner joints, mountings, the steering column and nearby suspension components must also be inspected.
Steering options and calibration
Steering-angle information, end-stop learning, wheel alignment and vehicle coding can affect steering operation. Front EPS, Variable Sport Steering and Integral Active Steering must be correctly identified.
BMW EPS Fault Codes and Code Families
Send a complete ISTA or equivalent diagnostic report, including the reporting control unit, full code, description, status, frequency, mileage and environmental information. These examples appear in BMW service information, but their meaning and repair route depend on model, production date, software level and test-plan results. A code alone does not prove that the rack must be replaced.
| Code or code family | What it can indicate | What should be checked |
|---|---|---|
| 4823E1 | EPS unavailable briefly at engine start on certain applications; BMW service information identifies a specific start-up undervoltage condition. | Record battery and cranking voltage, code status and the exact vehicle application. Follow the applicable ISTA test plan and check the required software level before replacing parts. |
| 4823E6 | Internal control-unit or power-pack entry documented on certain BMW i3 vehicles with an intermittent EPS warning at drive-ready start. | Use the complete ISTA test plan and verify software/I-level. BMW service guidance for the documented condition directs programming and coding rather than automatic rack replacement. |
| 4823F9 / 4823FA | Excess-temperature or internal-overload reduction of steering assistance, sometimes after repeated parking manoeuvres or extended time at full lock. | Allow the symptom conditions and code status to be documented, check mechanical freedom and voltage, and verify the vehicle software level. On specified applications BMW identifies a software correction. |
| 4823C6 | BMW EPS fault entry that service information has linked to software on particular F30 applications. | Do not generalise it to every BMW. Record the full ISTA description and status, confirm the vehicle I-level and follow the vehicle-specific test plan. |
| Communication and voltage codes | Low supply voltage, power interruption or network communication can reduce assistance or create EPS warnings without an internal rack defect. | Send the complete vehicle scan. Check the battery, charging system, fuses, power, earths, connectors and network faults before condemning the EPS unit. |
| No stored EPS DTC | Mechanical wear, knocking, play, stiffness, binding or notchy movement can exist without an electronic code. | Inspect the rack, inner joints, mountings, steering-column joints and nearby suspension components. A clear symptom description or video is useful. |
No BMW EPS Fault Code but a Noisy Rack?
This is possible. Diagnostic trouble codes are generated for conditions monitored by the control modules; they do not identify every worn guide, bush, inner joint, mounting point or other mechanical source of noise and play.
If the steering knocks, creaks, feels loose, binds or becomes notchy while the scan remains clear, describe when it happens—for example while parking, changing direction, crossing uneven surfaces or turning near full lock.
A BMW Fault Code Is Not a Complete Diagnosis
BMW diagnostic records can include fault status, frequency, mileage, voltage and surrounding operating conditions. Low voltage, coding, calibration, wiring, communication, alignment and other vehicle conditions can create steering warnings without proving an internal rack failure.
Our approach: we match the symptoms and diagnostic information to the vehicle and original rack, review the electrical and mechanical evidence, and explain the appropriate assessment step before BMW EPS rack repair or reconditioning is agreed.
How BMW Electric Rack Repair and Reconditioning Works

BMW Electric Power Steering FAQs
Do all BMW models use the same electric steering rack?
No. Steering type, rack generation and equipment vary by model, year and specification. The VIN and original rack number must be checked.
Can you repair my original BMW steering rack?
Many suitable units can be assessed for repair or reconditioning, but the rack must be identified and its condition considered before work is confirmed.
Can I buy a reconditioned BMW EPS rack?
Yes, for suitable applications and subject to stock. Send the VIN and original rack number so we can check supply, exchange terms and price.
Does a BMW steering warning always mean the rack has failed?
No. Voltage, wiring, communication, coding, calibration, alignment and other vehicle conditions can produce EPS warnings. A proper diagnosis is essential.
Can a BMW rack be mechanically noisy without a fault code?
Yes. Electronic diagnostics do not detect every worn mechanical component. The rack and nearby steering and suspension parts should be inspected.
Will the BMW need coding or calibration?
Depending on the model and work completed, steering-angle calibration, end-stop learning, coding, alignment or other setup may be required. This is confirmed for the individual vehicle.
