Hydraulic systems rely on secure pressure and return circuits. A leak may come from a hose, rigid pipe, crimp, union, seal, reservoir or the main rack or pump. Cleaning and inspecting the system is important because fluid can travel along components and make the source difficult to identify.
Intermediate shafts and universal joints transmit the driver’s input from the column to the rack or box. Corrosion, seizure or play can create notchy operation, poor self-return, knocking or looseness. However, similar symptoms can also come from the column, rack or suspension. Therefore, check the complete linkage before replacing parts.

Worn or damaged rack mounting bushes can allow unwanted rack movement, which may contribute to knocks, delayed response or inconsistent feel. In addition, a technician must check the rack housing, mounting brackets, fasteners and surrounding structure because a new bush will not correct a cracked housing, damaged bracket or loose mounting point.
For suitable hydraulic and electric racks, we may be able to modify the level of assistance to make the steering lighter or, where appropriate, firmer. This can help disabled drivers and drivers with reduced strength or mobility, and may also suit classic or modern cars where a different steering feel is required.
We normally make these adjustments to the rack or its control system rather than modifying the power steering pump. What can be achieved depends on the rack design, condition and application, and some units cannot accept a safe modification.
