A Ford Transit is expected to feel stable and predictable, whether it is carrying tools, passengers or a full payload. The van should then be inspected with the wheels unloaded and, where appropriate, under normal load. By applying short, controlled movements at the steering wheel while observing the column shaft, rack input, rack housing, inner joints and outer joints, it is possible to see where motion is being lost. Checking both sides matters, as a single worn joint can be missed if the steering is held in the wrong position.
A road test can add valuable context, but it does not replace physical checks. The technician should also inspect tyre condition, wheel-bearing security, suspension bushes and subframe mounting points.
