A steering wheel that suddenly needs two hands to turn at parking speed is more than an annoyance. Heavy steering wheel causes can range from a simple tyre-pressure issue to internal resistance in the rack, a steering column fault or a problem within the electric power steering system. The pattern of the symptom matters: steering that is heavy all the time requires a different diagnosis from assistance that cuts in and out, or a wheel that becomes stiff only when turning in one direction.

Why a steering wheel becomes heavy
The driver turns the steering wheel, the column transfers that movement to the rack or steering box, and the system provides assistance appropriate to the vehicle and driving conditions. Any restriction in that mechanical path, or any loss of assistance, can make the wheel feel unusually heavy.
A fault may be obvious, such as a warning message on a vehicle with electric power steering (EPS). In other cases, there may be no dashboard warning at all. Low system voltage and charging faults
Electric steering systems are sensitive to voltage. Noise should also be recorded accurately. A clunk may suggest play in a joint or mounting, while a groan, electronic warning or sudden loss of assistance gives the diagnostic process a different direction.
